Uninstalling Alteryx licenses the right way

There are some different scenarios where an uninstallation of the Alteryx license is relevant. When an employee leaves the company and a new colleague needs to take over the Alteryx license. If your computer crashes and you need to access Alteryx with the old license on your new computer.

In this blog post I will go through the steps of uninstalling an Alteryx license in some different scenarios.

Scenario 1: You still have access to the computer where you want to remove the Alteryx license from

The first section will take you through the steps of uninstalling a license in the scenario where you still have access to the computer, where you want to remove the license from. In Inviso, we will always recommend our customers, to ask an employee to follow these steps before handing over a computer which is no longer going to be used.

Step 1: Open Alteryx

Step 2: Under the “Options” pane, choose “Manage Licenses”:

Step 3: In the “Manage Licenses” window check off the license you want to uninstall and click on the blue “Deactivate License” button in the bottom:

Step 4: In the window that appears confirm the deactivation by clicking “OK”.

The license is now released and ready to be used by a new user on a different computer.

Note: Remember to copy-paste the license key to another destination before you remove it if you do not have it saved other places.

If you do not have access to the computer, where you need to uninstall an Alteryx license then there are two possible solutions.

Move the license directly in Alteryx, or

Get your company’s Alteryx License Owner (License Administrator) to release the license in the Alteryx Gallery.

Scenario 2: You do not have access to the computer where you want to remove the license from, but you do know the email address the license was activated with

If your computer has crashed and you are not able to access Alteryx to deactivate the license before moving it, follow the steps below to transfer the license directly within Alteryx.

Step 1: Download Alteryx on your new computer. The first time you open Alteryx type in the license key and the email address you used on the old computer.

Step 2: The following dialog box will appear, choose “Move All Licenses”:

The license will be moved to your new computer and you are now able to use Alteryx again.

This solution can also be used to move an earlier employees license if you know which mail address the employee used to activate the license. Type in this email address and the license key and move the license to your computer. After this you can follow the steps in scenario 1 to remove the license and activate it again with your own email address.

Scenario 3: You do not have access to the computer where you want to remove the license from, and you do not know the email address the license was activated with

Contact your company’s Alteryx license owner. The license owner (license administrator) is able to see an overview of all your companies’ licenses, the users, and the number of seats available within Alteryx Gallery.

The license owner will be able to delete the old user from the license and a new seat will be available for a new user to activate.

Are you the license owner within the company? Follow the steps below to delete a license from a user.

Step 2: Click on the “wrench” icon in the upper left corner:

If it is not possible for the Alteryx license server to get in contact with the old machine and deactivate the license, you will need to get in contact with Alteryx Fulfillment.
